Westhill Primary P3 team, along with their coaches, Stuart Henderson and Craig Strachan, have done amazingly well and progressed to the final of the Westhill Gala. Rock Challenge Finals – Photos from Dundee

Just to start the ball rolling, we have now received 5 photos of the Westhill Academy cast that appeared in the Rock Challenge final at the Caird Hall in Dundee last night. More photos to follow, but you can enjoy these in the meantime while I wait to complete my collection!

Unfortunately, it took me longer than expected to find out the result of last night’s Scottish Rock Challenge final at the Caird Hall in Dundee, and I still don’t know who came third! Angry

I am, however, pleased to be able to report that Westhill Academy were placed 4th for their dance “The Discovery of Elemora”, and that Fraserburgh Academy were placed 2nd with “Dorothy Decides”. My report on these pieces from my viewing at the Aberdeen heats can be found elsewhere in this blog.

Although unofficial, I believe that Arbroath High School won the final, with Fraserburgh 2nd, Westhill 4th and Mackie Academy (Stonehaven) in 5th place. If anyone knows who was 3rd, please let me know!!

We at PomPrint would like to extend our congratulations to both the Fraserburgh and Westhill teams and hope to be working with you again next year. If anyone has any photos of last night’s event that I can post on this blog, please send them to me as soon as possible, so that I can get a gallery together.

PS Katrina Clark from Fraserburgh has just informed me that 3rd place went to Arbroath Academy. Thanks for the feedback Katrina!

Coming soon…

Just over a week ago, I gave readers of this blog a list of things to come in the near future. If you refer to this list and compare with what we have posted during the ensuing period, I’m sure that you will agree that we have very nearly completed ‘our manifesto’. In light of the aforesaid, I am producing this by way of an update to give you a taste of what is to come on this blog over the next couple of weeks.

  1. Rock Challenge news from several schools in England and an update from Fraserburgh and Westhill as they prepare for the Dundee Scottish regional finals.
  2. News about our support for 3 cancer charities, in Fraserburgh, Cockermouth and (now) Nottingham.
  3. Tutorials on using the Inkscape vector graphics program to produce ‘Art Nouveau’ style borders and motifs.
  4. More tutorials on using Gimp to produce elementary photomanipulations.
  5. Pictures and news about one of our stock car racing customers.
  6. More ‘Special Offers’ from Billy.
  7. More clip art, photoclips, fonts, flags, borders and more.
  8. Another Caption Contest, this time ‘just for fun’.
  9. Results of the March competition, along with the winning entries.
  10. More details about the April contest (the lottery).
  11. Anything else that crops up during everyday life at PomPrint Designs (hopefully more local photographs if the weather holds).

In support of items 3 and 4 (above) I have put together a piece of artwork to illustrate some of the techniques that I intend to cover in the next few tutorials.

Here you can see that I have made up a simple curvy motif and used it to make a border and a set of mathematically-inspired ‘subjects’. I have also included the use of textures and gradient fills (on the table top) and the superimposing of one of our photoclips (a lily in this case, to give an eastern feel), complete with shadow.

Although I have had a little bit of feedback about my GIMP tutorials, mainly about the way they were written and presented, I have yet to hear from anyone who has used them successfully. Please contribute if you can!! This site is specifically designed for all its members to share ideas and resources.

More news from the UK Rock Challenge.

I am not a devout user of twitter, but I have my Gwibber program running all day on my machine at work, so I get short snippets of messages delivered to me on a regular basis. Most of these I tend to miss or ignore, but to my complete surprise I noticed one marked “@TheSteveAllen……”, so I took note of it! Continue reading

Sexuality, Tsunamis and Scarecrows!

Dorothy Decides - logo for 2012As a result of my posting yesterday celebrating the glorious Aberdeenshire weather, and how it was good that this year’s Rock Challenge event at the AECC would not be snow-effected as in previous years, there was some kind of inevitability that all that would change! I was not at all surprised, therefore, when at 5 o’clock yesterday evening, it started to snow…and snow it did!!

Despite the weather, I thought that this event was far too good to miss, especially as I was unable to attend last year’s show, and one of my colleagues had to go in my place. Continue reading
